All right, so our first question is from Kathy, what can I expect on my first visit with a holistic pet.

So a holistic veterinarian is going to get probably a different history of your pet. Most likely, they're going to dive a little bit deeper into activities that your pet is engaged in sleeping patterns, eating patterns, looking at the diet, asking more history about medications, supplements, vaccinations, really wanting to know more about the whole animal? And might even ask you questions about the emotional state of your animal? Are they anxious? Are they frustrated? Do they act out? We want to we want to get more information because we're looking at the whole picture, not just coming in and saying oh, he's limping, let's look at his leg. So, so a lot of times, and then the examination might be a little bit different depending on what kind of alternative medical medicine they practice. So for instance, for Chinese medicine, we're going to feel pulses, we're going to look at tongue color, we may I think I would always smell the ears to see if there was any abnormal odor there. So we look at things just a little bit differently. So I would think that you would probably have a longer history taking process. And sometimes that first intake with a holistic veterinarian can be long, you may have more like a 45 to 60 minute first evaluation, sometimes even 90 minutes, it won't be a 10 minute deal, usually.

All right, that is good to know. The next question is from Cindy can herbal remedies like medications have side effects? And what are some of the most common herbal formulas that are used?

Dr. Judy
3:16
Though I can't give you common herbal formulas, because it depends whether you go to a doctor who is using Western herbal medicine I vertic or Chinese medicine. So from a Chinese medicine perspective, I have my favorites but and ones that tend to get used a lot. But it also depends which company you're ordering from because something might be called Shao sun or it might be called free and easy wander, you know, they might be the exact same thing, but depending on the company, they'll have different names on them. And yes, there absolutely can be side effects with herbs. For instance, one of my junior doctors, who was just starting to use tcvm theory trying to Chinese medicine theory picked an herbal formula for one of our patients because the dog had weakness in the hind end. So it's a dog podcast, we don't edit it out.

Dr. Judy

We're at our office, we have a lot of dogs so but she picked a formula called hind quarter weakness because the dog was weak in the hind end. The problem is hind quarter weakness is used for dogs who are too hot, and this dog was actually too cold. So it was a cooling formula and the dog actually got weaker in the back end. So when we reevaluated everything. We looked at that and said Oh, no, we needed the opposite formula. We needed the one that was going to warm up the channels and give the dog more energy in the back end. So once we changed it, the dog did brilliantly. But the most common side effects with herbal formulas are going to be GI upset. So sometimes, if we pick a very strong formula, it might be a little too strong at the beginning. So a lot of times, we have to start at a very low dose, gradually work our way up, see what they can tolerate. And then again, we're evaluating along the way to see are they responding appropriately? Or do we have to tweak that formula?
